The 1st ICAD Congress, which will take place in Castelo Branco on 16, 17 and 18 June under the central theme "Innovation in CAD", represents an opportunity to build collective knowledge, train professionals as agents of change and deepen the application of scientific evidence in understanding the complexity of addictive behaviours and dependencies. The choice of Castelo Branco underlines the importance of decentralising the debate, promoting the integration of different regional realities and valuing knowledge as an essential pillar in building effective community solutions.

The 1st Congress will feature 10 round tables, 4 conferences, 8 workshops, free papers and posters, addressing the various dimensions of addictions. These sessions will provide a privileged space to reflect on the need for multidisciplinary, citizen-centred approaches, promoting a constructive dialogue between different areas of knowledge.

As Pavel says, given the physical and psychosocial complexity of the causes and symptoms of addictive behaviours and dependencies, any segmented approach must give way, in a local and long-term context, to integrated, collaborative methodologies centred on the person as a whole. The First Congress reinforces the need to put the citizen at the centre of actions, as addictive behaviours are largely linked to living conditions. Clinical evidence shows that health is directly associated with the subjective and social quality of our activities, and advances in epigenetics illustrate how our behaviours, our diet, the physical exercise we do and the way we deal with stress influence our health by modifying the expression of our genes.

Co-operation thus emerges as a fundamental element for progress in health, encouraging creativity and promoting integrative approaches. The 1st Congress emphasises the importance of collaboration between different areas of knowledge. Only through successful co-operation can we build a more effective, inclusive and supportive system at the service of communities. It is by experiencing this successful cooperation that we can avoid the temptation to close ourselves off into isolated towers or into conflicts between individuals, specialities, approaches or institutions.

It is in this context that the 1st ICAD Congress is affirmed as a space for reflection, innovation and co-operation in the field of addictions.
